The educational websites which are available nowadays have proved to store a huge set of information with the advance help of the web development tool. These dynamic websites should be more informative and user-friendly for an education organization. Therefore, the main aim of this project is to make sure that the AHS’s website is informative and appeals. For AHS website, Assoc. Prof Dr. Malek has requested that this project should be well designed and able to enhance favor impression of users as well as to give essential information about the AHS’s background, academic studies, academic resources and other necessary information. Obviously, the postgraduate students of UUM CAS will be our primary audiences.
Website for AHS graduate school is a compact with informative content. This project involves the development of two websites which are in English version and another in Malay version. Both websites are having the same layout, design, database and so on. However, these two websites are separately build and they are just inter-linking together. The host name assigned for both websites is cas.uum.edu.my. The English version of the website is already hosted by the webmaster at UUM’s server (http://www.ahsgs.uum.edu.my/). However, the Malay version of the website is still under construction since the translating process of the content is estimated to be fully complete in January 2012.
Adobe Dreamweaver and WAMPP server are the main web developer tools to complete this task at the beginning of this project. However, these development tools are then changed to the using of Content Management System tool -Joomla 1.5. To develop a website by using the Joomla, the localhost must have fully operational web-server (APACHE), database (using MySQL) and server-side scripting language PHP. Together with these technical requirements of Joomla, the website would also need to have specific modules, components and plug-ins that are functioned within PHP for MySQL. For example, within Awang Had Salleh’s website, the basic modules that have been used are module of search, module of main menu, module of last news and so on. However, Joomla that is used here is not a web-server, which needs a fully compatible and functioning web server. Luckily, AHS’s website can use the server of the Computer Center in UUM. Hence, the process of hosting, domain name, database and web space is readily provided.
The minimal functionalities of these two websites are search engine, latest content display, contact form, google map, calendar display and so on. Meanwhile, AHS’s website can be supported by various browsers including in iphone, Internet Explorer 6-9, Mozila Firefox, Google Chrome, Safari, Opera and so on. In short, the AHS’s English version of website which took 6 months to develop is now fully- functioned and had much satisfied the requirements from Dr. Malek. Meanwhile, the website in Malay version is still under construction and probably will be launch in January 2012.
